What is the difference between mixed martial arts and martial arts?

Best Answer gets 10 points !!! The title says it all.

Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) is a combination of several styles of martial arts put into a sporty feel. MMA incorporates grappling, standup fighting, wrestling and take downs. It's a sport that puts martial arts into it.
Martial arts is NOT a sport. They are a way of life. They are a discipline that people choose to live by. They tend to have a more traditional feel to them
MMA is a sport that takes martial arts (not a sport) and makes them one. I think this is good because it puts martial arts into life in different ways.
Overall MMA is NOT better than traditional martial arts. It all depends on the student. If somebody is great in MMA chances are he's pretty good in all of the different types (grappling, standup fighting etc.) but he may not be able to take on somebody who is trained in one style.
Most MMA guys tend to be bigger, because MMA uses grappling and wrestling a lot more. Not a lot of standup fighting, but i must say, a lot of the standup fighting they do isn't all that good.
Martial artists devote their time to studying the type of their choosing.

But don't get me wrong, neither is better than the other. Some MMA athletes could completely annihilate a martial artist. But i also know martial artists who could drop MMA guys, no matter which type they study. It's all about the individual, not the style.

Recent MMA fighter deaths raise questions

The death of former heavyweight title contender Justin Eilers, due to a gunshot wound at the hands of his stepfather at a Christmas night party, marked the third death of a recent UFC fighter from under strange circumstances in a short period of time.

His death followed the Dec. 17 suicide of Justin Levens, 28, who had a couple of UFC fights in 2006. Additionally, in September, Evan Tanner, 37, a former UFC middleweight champion, died due to heat exposure when camping in the desert near Brawley, Calif.

Yahoo! Sports’ Dave Meltzer looks at each case to see is this a pattern or a string of coincidences.
